Archbishop Desmond Tutu was born in Klerksdorp in Makoeteng, in what used to be a township but is now a suburb of the city.
The Archbishop Desmond Tutu Heritage Village will be run as a nonprofit organisation for the benefit of the Matlosana Community. Income will be derived from leasing, sales, events and from SETA. In addition to the heritage value of the site as the birth place of Archbishop Tutu, it is the aspiration of the Anglican Diocese and the City Council to provide a facility in support of the Christian values, goals and vision portrayed by the Archbishop throughout his life, and so create a centre of learning for the benefit of the local and broader community.
The Village’s facilities will include: a Skills Development Centre, Old Age Home, Hi-Tech Interactive Museum, Conference Facility, Chapel and Auditorium, and a residence for local Anglican Diocese ministers.
