The Castle was built as the headquarters of the Dutch East Indies Company (VOC) in 1666. It is the oldest building in Cape Town and home to the historical paintings and furnishings of the Iziko William Fehr Collection.
The objects in the collection date from the 17th to the 19th centuries and reflect the lives and furnishing of affluent Cape urban households. The rooms on the main floor of Secunde’s House recreate the living space of Castle officials. The origins of the items range from Europe to the East, reflecting the diverse origins of the Cape people.
