The youngest of the National Botanical Gardens managed by the South African National Biodiversity Institute – the Hantam National Botanical Garden was established in 2007. Located just outside the town of Nieuwoudtville in the Northern Cape, the Garden serves as a centre for biodiversity research in the Bokkeveld Plateau and Succulent Karoo region.
Spanning a staggering 6 200ha across the Bokkeveld Plateau, the Garden is located in a truly remarkable place - one which is world-renowned for its incredible diversity of bulbous plants. Some 40% of the flora comprises bulbs that create colourful and spectacular displays in autumn and spring each year, attracting visitors from near and far. Almost a third of the species endemic to the area are threatened with extinction, making this a place of great national importance. Due to the incredible diversity and density of bulbs, Nieuwoudtville’s biodiversity is of international significance and it is often referred to as “the Bulb Capital of the World”.
