The Iziko Slave Lodge is one of Cape Town’s oldest buildings, with a history that spans three centuries. Iziko Museums aims to increase awareness of issues such as human rights, equality, peace and justice, transforming the Slave Lodge from a site of human wrongs to one of human rights.
An alcove features an interactive column of light, which commemorates slavery through a roll-call of slave names. The rings in the column are each inscribed with names of inmates of the Lodge. It inspires us to reflect on how generations of slaves were brought to the Cape, sold and inherited, like commodities.
Temporary exhibitions depict the history of the struggle against apartheid and from time to time profile South African political leaders.
