Joburg’s inner city has been been spruced up as part of a multimillion rand inner city renewal project. It’s a busy city and if you’re from out of town it may be best to go with a guide. Here are some tips to make sure you get the best out of your visit, and come back to explore more! From the north, you’ll enter the city through Braamfontein past Clive van den Berg’s striking Eland public sculpture, and check out these:
• 70 Juta Street for fashion, art and a cappucino
• The Joburg Theatre, Loveday St
• Constitution Hill, I Kotze St
The dramatic new entrance to the city is over the Nelson Mandela Bridge, the longest cable-stayed bridge in southern Africa, right into Jeppe St into the cultural hub of Newtown:
• Bassline, Mary Fitgerald Square
• Market Theatre, Bree St
• Museum Africa, 121 Bree St
• SAB World of Beer, Miriam Makeba St
• Sci Bono science museum, Miriam Makeba St
From here make your way to the beautifully streetscaped Main Street pedestrian precinct for coffee in an outdoor café. Take in the opulent Victorian and Art Deco architecture which reflect the enormous wealth created by Joburg’s gold mines in the early part of last century. The area around here is a vibrant shopping district, including the Carlton Centre at 150 Commissioner St (still the tallest building in Africa) and the Smal Street Mall.
• Ghandi Memorial, Ghandi Square
• Standard Bank Gallery, King George St
• ABSA Gallery, 161 Main Rd
• Johannesburg Art Gallery, Simmonds & Frederick St
On the edges of the central CBD are worthwhile attractions, the first a market for traditional Muti or medicines from all over Africa, and the other a chic arty precinct where Joburg’s cool crowd hangs out:
• Mai Mai Market, Anderson & Berea St
• Arts on Main, Main & Fox St
