The Historical Collection includes 17th-century Dutch paintings and Impressionist paintings, original prints and sculptures. The Brenthurst and Traditional Collections of objects produced by indigenous cultures of Southern Africa include headrests, beadwork and numerous other treasures.

There are extensive holdings of South African art from early 20th century paintings, sculptures and prints to state-of-the art digital installations. Modern International works range from Dada to Pop Art. In addition JAG has a robust programme of exhibitions focusing on major retrospectives, solo exhibitions and exhibitions for emerging artists as well as curated group exhibitions.
