The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board has played a significant role in the tourism industry in providing protection from shark attacks at popular KZN bathing beaches for more than 40 years. Achieving this goal with the least possible impact on the environment is a challenging task faced by its dedicated Operational and Research staff on a daily basis.

Although shark attacks can spell economic disaster for the coastal holiday trade, it is necessary to put the threat of an attack into perspective. Most sharks pose little or no threat to humans who enter the sea. There are certain factors and conditions which can play a role in increasing the possibility of an encounter.
