Paarl offers many attractions - from visits to the Afrikaans Language Monument and Paarl Mountain to wine and olive oil. The Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve was established to conserve the exceptional flora and fauna on the mountain. The mountain was declared a National Monument in October 1963 and the Meulwater Wild Flower Reserve was established in 1931. Nelson Mandela took his first steps to Freedom from Drakenstein Prison (the then Victor Verster Prison), right here on our doorstep of Paarl. paarlinfo@drakenstein.gov.za
The historic town of Wellington nestles at the foot of the Groenberg, in a picturesque valley including the well-known Bainskloof Pass, built by Andrew Geddes Bain and completed in 1853. Today, much of the original dry-course stonework is still visible. It was declared a National Monument in 1980. wellingtoninfo@drakenstein.gov.za; www.drakenstein.gov.za
