The Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site (COH WHS) is more than just stones and bones. A world away, with rolling African grassland and burning orange sunsets, this countryside haven is sure to soothe the soul. The area boasts exquisite natural beauty and as it is a short ride from Johannesburg and Pretoria is the ideal location for a relaxing weekend, an intimate wedding or a conference with a difference.
The 47,000ha COH WHS encompasses 200 caves holding some of the world’s most valuable fossils − many dating back three million years. International researchers travel to this area to piece together the puzzle of our family tree. Here, visitors can dig deep into our ancient past at the state-of-the-art Cradle of Humankind Visitor Centre, Maropeng and the Sterkfontein Caves.
There is also an astonishing diversity of bird, animal and plant life − some of it endemic to the area. Nature lovers won’t be able to say no to the tree canopy tours and hiking trails, or opt for a trail on horseback through the rugged mountains; a great option for children. With loads of adventure activities, including hot-air balloon rides and paintball, visitors can take full advantage of these and these will tick the box for thrill seekers. In need of some downtime? The arts and crafts studios are great to amble through at leisure, as there is no distracting city noise.
Luckily, although the excitement of a hunt was once a way of life, it is no longer necessary when feeling peckish. Nowadays, simply enjoy spectacular views of the serene Magaliesberg mountains at the dozens of restaurants and tea gardens close by. But one day isn’t enough to see everything. So, why not stay a weekend or at least a night and take it all in? Camp under the stars like our ancestors did, or indulge at an exquisite boutique hotel or picturesque country lodge. Simply choose, and feel right at home.
Visit the Cradle of Humankind and enjoy a whole lot of living where life began.
