The National Museum dates back to 1877 and has since developed into an institution of international stature. Intensive research is carried out in the natural and human sciences and valuable collections have been established. Through its displays and educational programmes, the Museum renders a service to all, engaging them in enjoyable and enlightening experiences and enriching the learning opportunities of all individuals.

Certain displays are accessible to persons with disabilities with large-format text, specially focussed lighting and sound. Unique displays include the only complete skeleton of the dinosaur Melanorosaurus that lived about 215 million years ago, live displays, the history of Bloemfontein/Mangaung (1846-2000) and a Bloemfontein street scene from the early 1900s.
