The Voortrekker Monument, inaugurated on 16 December 1949, commemorates the Voortrekkers, and has developed into a tourist destination and heritage institution. It also controls Fort Schanskop and Blood River. The Monument is the main attraction on site, symbolising Afrikaner nationalism of the 20th century. Although focusing on the Great Trek (1835-1852), many new yet related aspects have been added in recent years.

The historic marble frieze, famous tapestries and the cenotaph remain major attractions. A new Heritage Centre was inaugurated in 2008, containing a splendid exhibition on “Afrikaners in the 20th century: Pioneers, Beacons and Bridges; post card flashes from history”. It is probably the only comprehensive, objective exhibition about the Afrikaners in the world.
