This route is named after Chief Maqoma, who is known for inventing
the guerilla warfare style that became effective in SA’s fight for total
emancipation.
The Amathole District Municipality is not only home to historical
landmarks that can be traced back centuries ago, but it is also home to
hidden heritage treasures: From rock art to missionary history, from
wars of land dispossession to sites of recent political struggle history and
from music to sport history.
The Makana Heritage Route is named after Makana, also known as
Nxele-Makhanda, the only Xhosa not of royal lineage to be accorded
chiefly status, in acknowledgement of his courage, his leadership
abilities and his ability to see beyond the obvious, to the heart of a
situation.
This route is named after the great King Phalo, the last absolute ruler
of the Xhosa nation, who died 231 years ago, and who is remembered
for splitting the Xhosa nation into a double lineage to consolidate and
strengthen their authority and power.
