KWAZULU CULTURAL MUSEUM

Ulundi
 CULTURE

The KwaZulu Cultural Museum is part of the Ondini Historical Complex, which comprises the reconstructed Royal Residence of King Cetshwayo, one of the most representative collections of the rich cultural heritage of KwaZulu Natal, a stadium and a picnic site. The museum focuses on the Nguni-speaking peoples of South-Eastern Africa. Of note is its exceptional collection of beadwork.

Ondini, the Royal Residence of King Cetshwayo kaMpande, was burnt to the ground by British forces after the battle of Ulundi on 4th July 1879. It has been partially reconstructed according to archaeological evidence. The original baked hut floor of King Cetshwayo’s dwelling can be seen. A small site museum provides background to the history of the region. The layout of the Royal Homestead is explained and there are displays of the Zulu Monarchy, King Cetshwayo, the Anglo-Zulu War and the excavations of Ondini. King Cetshwayo’s silver mug, bible, necklace and shotgun are exhibited here.
