MUSEUM AFRICA

121 Bree Street, Newtown
 MUSEUM

Museum Africa was opened to the public in October 1935 as the Africana Museum, and after several relocations, it reopened as Museum Africa in August 1994 reflecting the transformation ethos of the post apartheid era. One of the unique features of Museum Africa is that it is home to a number of constituent museums. These include the Geological Museum and the Bensusan Museum of Photography.
The latter derives its name from its founder, Dr Arthur Bensusan. In 1968 he donated his collection, developed over a period of 30-years. This collection consisted of 400 antique cameras, 5000 photographs and 2000 photographic books. In August 2009 Museum Africa will launch displays of the oldest and one of the most comprehensive geological collections in the country. The display of more than 15 000 specimens is particularly strong in South African rocks and minerals, but also includes an international collection that has many rare and beautiful specimens.
