LILIESLEAF

8 Winston Avenue, Rivonia
 MUSEUM

Opened as an interactive and experiential museum in June 2008, Liliesleaf personifies the beliefs, motivations and aspirations of a unique group of Liberation Struggle leaders who were committed to bringing  about socio-political transformation. These leaders include, amongst others, Nelson Mandela, Govan Mbeki, Walter Sisulu, Ahmed Kathrada, Bram Fischer, Joe Slovo, Ruth First, Raymond Mhlaba, Rusty Bernstein, Bob Hepple, Harold Wolpe and Dennis Goldberg. Liliesleaf forms a crucible for the liberation movement as it commemorates a seminal point in South Africa’s history in the struggle for freedom. On 11th July 1963, the security police raided Liliesleaf, and most of the Rivonia trialists were arrested. The Liliesleaf Legacy Project is the result of several years of planning and renovations to preserve the historic structures and buildings of Liliesleaf, and present an experiential exhibit of the Liberation Struggle stories of the people who lived at and operated from the farm.

THE LIBERATION CENTRE forms the starting point of the visitor’s journey of enlightenment from struggle to liberation to transformation.
This multipurpose centre houses:
• An Auditorium, seating 66 people, where an orientation film is shown
• Permanent and temporary exhibits
• A curio shop, coffee bar and crèche

The historical buildings and structures comprising the Main House, the Thatched Cottage, Outbuildings and the Coal Bunkers make up THE MUSEUM and offer the visitor a glimpse into this unique period of the struggle in a dynamic and interactive manner.

THE RESOURCE AND ARCHIVE CENTRE contains theoretical and ideological literature, archival documentation, cuttings and film footage that will provide visitors the opportunity to delve into writings and media that shaped the liberation debate.
