!Khwa ttu, the San Culture and Education Centre, 70km north-west of Cape Town, offers an unique introduction to the world of the descendents of the first indigenous people of southern Africa. !Khwa ttu is the ultimate destination for discerning visitors. The San (in the past also called ‘Bushmen’) take visitors on a journey into San history, traditional knowledge, skills, languages, customs and current affairs. This enjoyable, informative and educational event remains in visitors’ memories for a long time.
Besides the San-guided tour, creative dishes are presented in the cosy restaurant, unique San-produced items are sold in the craft shop and there is an efficiently run conference room.
If visitors would like to stay at !Khwa ttu for a few days, the guest house, bush camp and bush cottage provide appealing accommodation.
The San are an ancient hunter-gathering people who, in more recent decades, have encountered poverty and discrimination; however !Khwa ttu is not a monument to suffering or misery. It is a living celebration of past and present San culture, an uplifting and inspirational experience.
The centre itself is housed within a series of lovingly restored old West Coast farm buildings, and the surrounding nature reserve teems with an abundance of birdlife, game and fynbos, with stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean, rolling bushland and Table Mountain.
!Khwa ttu is a joint venture by the San people represented by the Working Group of Indigenous Minorities in Southern Africa (WIMSA) and a Swiss philanthropic foundation, UBUNTU, and is the only San-owned and operated cultural centre in the Western Cape.
The San are looking forward to welcoming you to !Khwa ttu
