Hailed as the most ambitious heritage project of our democratic government, The Freedom Park is located on a 52-hectare site on Salvokop in Pretoria. The Park offers a unique and exceptional opportunity to experience and appreciate our history; to walk where our ancestors have walked and to learn about our shared heritage as brothers and sisters of a diverse nation. The Park weaves the story of where we come from and the historical and cultural events that shaped what South Africa is today. In the mind’s eye, The Freedom Park brings to life ancient warriors who roamed the plains of Southern Africa. It recalls to memory the thousands of men and women who bore the yoke of slavery and a people so nearly destroyed by genocide. Above all, it showcases a nation that does not shrink from the greatest sacrifice, to achieve the extraordinary. It is the heartbeat of all that is South African; the hub through which to know this land of promise, in all its diversity. The Park comprises a number of areas, each with its own distinct symbolism and attraction.
Sikhumbuto is The Freedom Park’s major memorial element and stands as a testimony to the conflicts that shaped the South Africa we live in today. It comprises the Wall of Names, the Amphitheatre, the Eternal Flame, the Gallery of Leaders, the Sanctuary and the ascending Reeds. The Wall of Names is inscribed with the names of those who died during South Africa’s eight major conflicts; namely Pre-Colonial Wars, Slavery, Genocide, Wars of Resistance, the South African War, the First and Second World War and the Struggle for Liberation.
Isivivane is the symbolic resting place of those who died in the struggles for humanity and freedom.
To construct Isivivane, the nine provinces were asked to provide a boulder from an historically significant place within their province. Along with two boulders representing national government and the international community, these boulders surround the Lesaka – the symbolic burial ground where heroes and heroines rest.
