PILGRIM'S REST

Mpumalanga
 MUSEUM

The historic village of Pilgrim’s Rest offers the visitor the opportunity to experience something of the life and times of an early South African gold mining community and industry. There are six museums in the town. The Dredzen Shop and House Museum represents a typical general dealer’s store of the period 1930 – 1950. The Victorian House Museum is a fine example of the wood and corrugated iron architecture, which is typical of Pilgrim’s Rest. The Pilgrim’s and Sabie News Printing Museum celebrates the history of publishing and the press on the Pilgrim’s Rest goldfields from 1874 to 1919. The Central Garage Transport Museum has vintage vehicles and exhibits transport methods, characteristic of the area. The Diggings Site Museum records the first great gold rush in South Africa and history of alluvial gold mining. The Alanglade Period House Museum, built in 1915 to serve as official mine manager’s residence at Pilgrim’s Rest, is furnished with objects from the Period 1900-1930.
